Gold Medalists
Henry Huang
Henry Huang is thirteen years old. He began piano studies with Dr. Govel from April 2019. He completed the Royal Conservatory of Music and achieved First Class Honors with Distinction award for his excellent performance. He won the Western United States Regional Gold Medal and was invited to perform at Celebration of Excellence Recital for two consecutive years. He successfully passed his MTAC Certificate of Merit exams with Excellent ratings. He achieved the State Honor award for his exemplary grades and was invited to perform at MTAC Conventions. He also competed in SYMF and the CAPMT Piano Ensemble in 2019 with his sister Hannah Huang, receiving his first piano trophy and Five Star Rating respectively. Henry had won at both Branch and Regional levels in the Southern California Junior Bach Festival (SCJBF) in 2021. Recently, he has won the Branch level in the SCJBF and will continue the regional competition on May 15th, 2022. Henry is also an active member of Arjun and Friends, which is a community volunteer group of pianists. Henry never stops learning piano and continues to study music every day. He also loves reading, drawing and playing tennis.
Hannah Huang
Hannah Huang is eleven years old. She began piano studies with Dr. Govel from April 2019. With Dr. Govel’s guidance, she successfully completed Royal Conservatory of Music and achieved First Class Honors with Distinction award for her excellent performance. She won the Western United State Regional Gold Medal and was invited to perform at Celebration of Excellence Recital for two consecutive years. She successfully passed her MTAC Certificate of Merit exams with Excellent ratings. She achieved the State Honor award for her exemplary grades and was invited to perform at MTAC Conventions. She also competed in Southwestern Youth Music Festival (SYMF) and CAPMT Piano Ensemble Auditions in 2019 with her brother, receiving a trophy and Five Star Rating respectively. She received Honorable mention award in 2021 Scholarship Audition. She has won the Branch level in the Southern California Junior Bach Festival (SCJBF) and will continue the regional competition on May 15th, 2022. Hannah is also an active member of Arjun and Friends, which is a community volunteer group of pianists. Hannah never stops learning piano and enjoys playing music every day. In addition to piano, Hannah also loves reading, drawing and swimming. She is bright, optimistic and keeps smiling all day long!
Kenna Tu
Kenna Tu is in 8th grade. She has been studying piano under the tutelage and guidance of Dr. Linda Govel for nine years. Kenna was encouraged by Dr. Govel to be one of the youngest students to compete in the California Junior Bach Festival starting at the age of five and has won at both Branch and Regional levels and competed in the Junior Bach Festival Complete Works Audition. Kenna also competed in the annual Southwestern Youth Music Festival (SYMF) and won trophies each year including multiple First Place trophies. She also competed in the National Piano Guild Auditions and was awarded the highest ranking of Top Talent. She successfully passed Level 9 of the MTAC Certificate of Merit exams with Excellent ratings and was invited to perform at both MTAC Conventions and Branch Honors recitals. Kenna passed the Royal Conservatory of Music practical and theory exams up to Level 7 and received First Class Honors with Distinction, Center Certificate of Excellence, Western United States Regional Gold Medal awards for two consecutive years, and was invited to perform at the
Southern California Celebration of Excellence Ceremony and Recital. Kenna also competed in CAPMT Sonata/Sonatina competitions and has won Second Place and honorable mention. She greatly enjoys competing with her duet partner at numerous SYMF competitions winning multiple First Place trophies and the CAPMT Ensemble Auditions receiving Highest Performance Rating and invited to perform at the CAPMT Southern Honors Festival. Kenna had the privilege of been chosen to perform in the Young Pianist Showcase presented by Dr. Govel’s studio. She is a member of Music Students’ Service League and Arjun and Friends, a community volunteer group of pianists. In addition to piano, Kenna performed in Palos Verdes Ballet’s annual show--The Nutcracker, where she has been featured as Maria and Frits. She also enjoys theater and has been in multiple musicals including Peter Pan Jr. (Peter Pan), Freedom Bound (Maria), and Guys and Dolls Jr. (Adelaide). Her hobbies are reading, art, and traveling. She has a great sense of humor and enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and her puppy Teddy.
Andrew Tu
Andrew Tu is in 5th grade and has been studying piano under the nurturing guidance and encouragement of Dr. Linda Govel for six years. Andrew was inspired by Dr. Govel to compete in the CAPMT Sonata/Sonatina competitions at the age of 5 and won First Place. He also competed in the annual Southwestern Youth Music Festival and won trophies each year including multiple First Place trophies. Andrew competed in the National Piano Guild Audition with ten-piece programs and was awarded the highest ranking of Top Talent. He also competed in the California Junior Bach Festival and has won at both Branch and Regional levels. Andrew successfully passed his MTAC Certificate of Merit exams up to Level 7 with Excellent ratings and was invited to perform at both MTAC Conventions and Branch Honors recitals. Andrew passed the Royal Conservatory of Music practical and theory exams up to Level 6 and received First Class Honors with Distinction, Center Certificate of Excellence, and Western United states Regional Gold Medal awards and was invited to perform at the Southern California Celebration of
Excellence Ceremony and Recital. Andrew is a member of Arjun and Friends, a community volunteer group of pianists. In addition to piano, Andrew enjoys singing and has performed at his school’s Arts Alive and numerous concerts with Palos Verdes Children’s Choir where he was featured as a soloist. Andrew loves theater and has been in multiple musicals including Peter Pan Jr. (Mr. Smee), Willy Wonka Jr. (Augustus Gloop), A Ghost Tale for Mr. Dickens Jr. (Merlin and Mr. Pinch), and Frozen (Olaf). His hobbies are reading, solving puzzles, and constructing projects. Andrew enjoys traveling and spending time with his family and friends.
